Community radio stations in the country must be allowed to carry advertisements, according to players in the segment. They have made a plea to the government for the same. Community radio was opened up for educational institutions two years ago, but only as non-commercial ventures.

The telecom regulator has released a consultation paper on issues relating to community radio. It refers to key issues like the rationale for community radio, present framework and progress of the scheme, issues relating to eligibility, licensing process, funding of community radio station and regulation and monitoring of the radio stations.

The paper, points out that 20 months after the community radio policy was announced, there’s just one licensee in the country. Complex licensing procedure is understood to be a hurdle for several potential players.

There are certain doubts within the ‘Authority’ in relation to FM radio. The Trai meeting, scheduled for Friday, is expected to clear the doubts.

Radio was for long considered as a “passive” media option, good enough to reach just 8-10% of potential audience. But, thanks to FM stations, the potential of Radio as a reach medium today is as high as Print, if not more, in Delhi and Mumbai. And, the average time spent listening to Radio is as good as average TV viewing time.
