Private FM radio companies have sought an extension of the April 29 deadline for paying their annual licence fees, till a decision on the recommendations of the Amit Mitra committee is taken. The committee has suggested a switchover from the present licence fee regime to a revenue sharing method. It has recommended a share of 4 per cent of the gross revenue in the revenue sharing regime.

It's not the television networks alone that have raked in record amounts by getting to telecast the India-Pakistan cricket series. All India Radio has been able to charge spot rates of Rs 10,000 per 10-second slots for the upcoming one-day series, a more than 180 per cent increase over rates that prevailed during the recent tri-series in Australia.. The sale of ad inventory for the upcoming series has already earned AIR over Rs 6.5 crore.

Using multi-city localized broadcasting, RED FM now provides a city-specific spin to their programs. RJs from Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata studios recently interviewed actress Tabu “live” from the Mumbai studio, but listeners in each city could only tune in to the dialogue with their local RJ.

Interestingly Prasar Bharti had earlier lost the bid for the radio rights for India, as Ten Sports that sought global radio rights from Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) was the highest bidder.

Radio Mirchi, which is hosting the first ever ‘Mirchi Kaan Awards’ for excellence in radio advertising, has finalized the jury list and appointed Ernst & Young as its official notary and tabulators for the awards. The radio brand from Times Entertainment Network (India) Limited has roped in well-known names from the advertising industry as jury members. There are 13 jury members in all.

Inter-ministerial consultation process for the second phase of FM radio privatisation would begin in a couple of days, according to government sources. However, speculation is rife about whether the Union Cabinet can take a decision on the issue, as the Lok Sabha would be dissloved on February 6, to usher in early polls. If a decision on FM radio is seen as a poll sop, it may be deferred till the next government is formed. If not, the issue would be taken to the Cabinet after about a month.

Four FM radio channels and scores of music companies have locked horns in the Bombay and Delhi High Courts over an order of the copyright board granting compulsory licences and fixing rates of royalty for broadcasting sound recordings. On the one side are radio channels like Entertainment Network India, Music Broadcast, Radio Mid-Day and Millennium Broadcast. On the other side is Phonographic Performance, a copyright society with over 60 music firms as members, and Super Cassette Industries, one of the largest owners of copyright in sound recordings with nearly 120,000 of film songs, gazals and other music renderings.

Some of the tricky commercial issues related to private FM radio are likely to go to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) for its views, before the draft guidelines are taken to the Union Cabinet. Revenue-sharing model, migration modalities, and changes in licensing conditions are among the issues that Trai may look at.
