After four years of price cuts, leading air-conditioner (AC) makers are set to increase prices this summer, mainly due to the unprecedented rise in steel prices. Market leader LG is expected to raise prices by around Rs 1,000 across all models, while Hitachi is planning to raise prices by 5-7 per cent. Samsung has already increased prices by 20 per cent.

Coca-Cola India is gearing up for summertime by launching mango drink Maaza in 200-ml and 250-ml pack sizes across the country. In keeping with its affordability strategy for driving volume growth this summer, Coca-Cola India will soon launch fruit drink Maaza in 125 ml cartons and introduce 600 ml pack size for Coke and Fanta.

With an average price decline of about 8 per cent to 10 per cent every year in the sector, the domestic colour television market is fast moving up the value chain in terms of technology and design. According to industry watchers, while the share of the entry level 14-inch CTV is expected to fall in the current year, the flat television segment is set to make rapid inroads. "We expect flat televisions to account for more than 20 per cent of sales of the market in 2004. Conventional televisions are getting outdated," points out an official from the Consumer Electronics and Television Manufacturers Association (CETMA).

After a gap of five months, pay channels may soon light up small screens in Chennai homes again as the multi system operators (MSOs) and cable TV distributors are close to strike a deal with the satellite TV broadcasters, to renew the beaming of pay channels. However, the resumption of the service may see the monthly cable bill shoot up by Rs 100 or Rs 150 per month.

Subroto Sengupta, the doyen of Indian advertising, died in Kolkata on Monday. He was in his late seventies. Sengupta joined the British agency D J Keymer along with stalwarts like Tara Sinha, film director Satyajit Ray and S N Banerji. When Keymer’s shut shop, a handful of people including Sengupta set up Clarion Advertising, which has now morphed into Bates India.

As per reliable sources at Sahara, the Subroto Roy group is launching a broadsheet daily edition for the city of Mumbai. The date of the launch has not yet been finalized and the company is still scouting the market for possible inroads into the readership graph. The newspaper is being designed from Sahara’s Delhi office and is in English.
