After setting up seven ‘Lifestyle’ stores in India, Lifestyle International Pvt Ltd—part of the Landmark Group—is now planning to move into the consolidation phase in 2004-05. Hence, during the period, there will be no expansion of ‘Lifestyle’ stores. In 2005-06, the company plans to expand the number of ‘Lifestyle’ stores from seven to 13 and hopes to garner a sales turnover of Rs 450 crore. By 2006-07, there will be 19 ‘Lifestyle’ stores spanning 1 million sqft of space compared to 55,000 sqft size of the seventh ‘Lifestyle’ store that has been recently launched at Inorbit Mall, Malad (Mumbai). For the purpose, the company has earmarked an investment budget of Rs 120 crore over the next two years.

Four FM radio channels and scores of music companies have locked horns in the Bombay and Delhi High Courts over an order of the copyright board granting compulsory licences and fixing rates of royalty for broadcasting sound recordings. On the one side are radio channels like Entertainment Network India, Music Broadcast, Radio Mid-Day and Millennium Broadcast. On the other side is Phonographic Performance, a copyright society with over 60 music firms as members, and Super Cassette Industries, one of the largest owners of copyright in sound recordings with nearly 120,000 of film songs, gazals and other music renderings.

Finally, Hindustan Lever Ltd (HLL) is all set to test its water product in February. The product would first be test-marketed in southern parts of the country, and based on the results of the test-market, the company would decide on the timing of the final launch. The product will be tested thoroughly before it is launched, sources added. The much-awaited water foray of HLL, which is a dominant player in the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) market and a leader in most of the sectors that it is present, can thus be expected to be launched formally a few months down the line.

The accent appears to be on ‘creative image building campaigns’ in the political advertising arena these days. In order to woo voters across the country, major political parties are now seeking the help of leading advertising agencies to design their image-building ad campaigns for the forthcoming general elections. Gone are the days when political parties mainly relied on in-house agencies or small creative outfits. And this year, a new medium enters the political advertising space: Short Messaging Service (SMS), which will support print, television and outdoor media campaigns during the Lok Sabha polls 2004, according to industry analysts.
