Aptech Limited has entered into a joint venture with Canada based Academy of Learning. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two institutions was signed on January 29, 2004 and the operations are expected to begin in April. The combined synergies of the two institutions will add a new thrust to the IT and non-IT education space in both Indian and Canadian markets. Students across various disciplines are expected to benefit from the joint venture.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) is firm on implementing the revised interconnect usage charges (IUC) regime from February 1. “There are no moves at all in the Trai to delay the IUC implementation. It will be implemented on February 1, as decided earlier,” said Trai chairman Pradip Baijal. This assumes importance since most of the operators have been indicating that IUC implementation may be delayed since other operators are not ready.

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) has announced reduced SMS charges for its postpaid cellular subscribers to 40 paise per message from the existing 60 paise. The charges are valid for intra-circle as well as SMS across circles. The prepaid subscribers will continue to be charged at the current level of 60 paise.

Sri Adhikari Brothers Television Network Ltd. (SABTNL), has entered into a joint venture with Mumbai-based Lotus Films for film production. SABTNL runs SAB TV and supplies television software to Doordarshan networks. The two companies hold equal stake in the joint venture.

The domestic entertainment industry is expected to grow at a CAGR of 20 per cent from the current size of around Rs 166 billion to Rs 419 billion by 2007, said Amit Mitra, secretary general of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI). The convention, slated for March 17-18 in Mumbai, will emphasise on India as a emerging market for global conglomerates.

Inter-ministerial consultation process for the second phase of FM radio privatisation would begin in a couple of days, according to government sources. However, speculation is rife about whether the Union Cabinet can take a decision on the issue, as the Lok Sabha would be dissloved on February 6, to usher in early polls. If a decision on FM radio is seen as a poll sop, it may be deferred till the next government is formed. If not, the issue would be taken to the Cabinet after about a month.

Aaj Tak is all set to telecast its new ‘news’ presentation, JBC. Javed Jaaferi will present the bi-weekly variety newsmagazine on Saturdays and Sundays. Dubbed as an entertainment show, JBC will be aired for 30 minutes.
