The direct-to-home (DTH) space witnessed a lot of action in 2008 with the launch of Big TV and Digital Airtel, and Sun Direct going pan-India. Videocon’s DTH launch plans have been delayed for now. The year also saw the introduction of personal video recorders. Given the positive growth of 2008, DTH players are looking forward to even better times ahead in 2009 for the direct-to-home industry.

Regional FM stations are all set to be the next big thing and 2009, which could possibly see the rollout of the Phase III of FM expansion, is expected to see these FM stations play a big role. Sure there are some difficult turns too, but the road ahead for the regional FM stations looks reasonably bump free.

Given the growing number of players and stiff competition in the DTH space, major players are shoring up their activities. DishTV has announced the premier of a recent Bollywood release, ‘Oye Lucky, Lucky Oye’, under the banner of UTV Motion Pictures over its Movie-on-Demand service within three and a half weeks of its theatrical release. Meanwhile, the DTH service provider aims for 9 million subscribers by 2010.

The Mumbai DTH space is getting a new player from today. Continuing with their pan-India expansion plans, Sun Direct launches its DTH service in Mumbai on Monday, December 8, 2008. Sun Direct had launched its service in Delhi and the NCR in the later half of October.

The FWICE on November 24 reiterated that the cine workers’ strike had been called off and that shootings had resumed completely. However, there were reports of trouble brewing in certain locations. Dinesh Chaturvedi, General Secretary, FWICE, was quick to refute these reports and confirmed that a core committee formed would sort out all differences between the workers and the producers.
