Good Relations (India) has appointed Meenakshi Sachdev Varma as its Chief Operating Officer with immediate effect. GRI also announced several new business acquisitions in each of its offices in Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai and Kolkata.

Mudra Communications has assigned Mumbai-based public relations firm Hanmer & Partners to handle its media communications. Mudra had shut down its public relations wing, Horizon, over a year back.

PR is a good precursor to advertising because it fills the environment, creates a mind space and therefore facilitates the penetration of advertising, he holds.

We look at corporate communications in two ways; first, promoting the corporate brand Samsung, and promoting the reputation of the brand; and, second, brand building activities. In the first, we have corporate reputation which involves social responsibility, the people and the service quality – a huge gamut is covered here. In the second role of promoting the brand, we have Samsung sponsoring the Samsung Cup, the ICC Champions Trophy or the Olympics; it’s PR that plays a role here.

PR agencies in India are the agents of change in this profession as the ownership of PR agencies have also gone through a transition. PR agencies have had a lot of foreign participation in the last couple of years. They brought in global international practices into India. It is a move in the right direction.

BharatMatrimony.com had called for a PR pitch nearly a month ago featuring all the top end PR agencies. Hanmer & Partners was among the national public relations firms that pitched for the account.

Actually, most often the agenda of the client requires us to be ‘spin doctors’! PR professionals are communicators and they can be called by various names. The point is to meet the client’s requirements, to ensure that the client gets his objectives. If that requires us to be ‘spin doctors’, then so be it.

LINOpinion has also significantly expanded its presence this year beyond the existing three branches in Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore. The network now includes Chandigarh, Lucknow, Hyderabad, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Kochi and Pune.

Sampark PR has recently clinched a number of new businesses that are expected to account for at least 25 to 30 per cent rise in the existing revenue. The casket of new businesses includes IDBI, Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee, Crossroads, Wellspun, Christine Valmey, High Tech Gears, REI Agro and Ashapura, and Opus Software.
