As the Information and Broadcasting Ministry is working on allowing a 20 per cent FDI in the private FM space, the ban in news and current affairs programmes still stays. While Prashant Pandey, COO, Radio Mirchi, says there are still miles to go before the actual implementation begins, Sumantra Dutta, former CEO of Radio City, feels that 20 per cent FDI still falls short of the 26 per cent that is allowed in other sectors.

With three or four stations and 10 million plus listeners, all sound the same. But with 20 stations, one would be forced to selectively target listeners with a variety of radio stations, says Vehrnon Ibrahim, National Programming Head of Red FM. He says that accurate information can help radio prove that it is an effective medium for advertisers, and advocates people metering-type research for listenership.

I think if the music is good, you could surely get a ghazal enthusiast to fancy a mainstream Bollywood hit, or vice versa. Coming to WorldSpace, it gives audience the luxury of choice. Among the Indian channels, Farishta is dedicated to Hindi classics and Jhankaar to current hit music (both film as well as Indipop) – which make easier for a listener to choose the kind of music at any given time.

The Information & Broadcasting Ministry has kept its word about allowing some liberalisation in the private FM Radio. The Ministry has cleared 20 per cent Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) for the sector. However, the ban on news and current affairs programmes stays.

With findings of the ILT study, which reveals that the base for radio could well exceed the reach of print in cities like Mumbai and Delhi, brand custodians are a lot more assured than they used to be. Sumantra Dutta, former COO of Radio City, feels radio advertising is getting bolder by the day with carefully worded scripts, brilliantly executed situations, the right strategy etc.

Radio Advertising has emerged out of the 'By the way, I am around' phase and what better way to illuminate this fact than through the Mirchi Kaan Awards. Radio Mirchi has invited entries for the calendar year 2005 and is confident of receiving over 350 entries this year, compared to 245 entries received last year.

The trend of TV soaps being aired on FM stations really began with Radio City airing the popular 'Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi' serial sometime ago when it was a part of the Star stable.

Due to the current situation in regards to radio licensing, FM stations don't generate enough revenues to spend on traditional forms of marketing. Consequently, the only way these brands can build themselves is through barter deals and tie-ups.

Internet and radio go very well together, like if you have a large number of small stations, the Internet can be an excellent way to combine these small stations into effectively larger stations. You could be simultaneously streaming content from any one location to other. You could also exchange content offline with stations around the world. You could interview people via the Internet. Audio chat can be used as a means to make the Internet a virtual recording studio for a radio station. The opportunities are tremendous.

The Internet can be an excellent way to combine a number of small radio stations into effectively larger stations, and one can simultaneously stream content from one location to another, says Dr. Arun Mehta, Chief Technical Officer, Net Radiophony India. There is a lot of space for radio as it is a "huge unexplored space in the Indian psyche", he says, adding that while television is in competition with other visual media, radio is not.

The political leaders are too busy making money for themselves, even if it means killing a medium as effective as this one. As a result, you don’t have any new stations coming up, and those that exist are on the verge of closing shop. Stations are also averse to experimenting with new formats because they feel completely bogged down by the financial constraints.”

Regional media players, mainly those in print media, are planning to make a foray into radio in the second phase of privatisation. Companies from Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir, Rajasthan, Kerala, Assam, Karnataka and Chennai are among those to have expressed interest in FM radio-II.
