Media buyers have much on their plate beginning April 2006. Media houses across the board have announced hiked rate cards and the most recent announcement comes from Go 92.5, Mid Day Mutlimedia’s radio division. After a span of two years, Go is inducing a hike of 25 per cent in its ad rates.

The radio operators, who have been allotted frequencies under Phase II of FM expansion, formally created the Association of Radio Operators of India, the FM radio industry body, on Friday. An 11-member ‘Constituent Assembly’ was formed to propose the constitution of the association.

WorldSpace, Inc on Friday reported its financial and operating results for the fourth quarter and full year ended December 31, 2005. The satellite-based digital radio service finished the year with 115,306 subscribers. The company added 40,235 subscribers in the fourth quarter of 2005, an increase of about 160 per cent over the 15,545 subscribers added in fourth quarter of 2004.

City dwellers across India can now enjoy a range of BBC programmes 24x7, thanks to a partnership between BBC World Service and WorldSpace satellite radio, which broadcasts to the Indian subcontinent. The programmes will be available in four languages – English, Hindi, Urdu and Bengali.

MRUC's Indian Listenership Track (ILT) 2005 Wave 3 numbers are out. The survey, which gives an indication of FM listenership in Mumbai and Delhi NCR, shows that while Mumbai has seen a slight dip in listeners in the latest round, Delhi NCR has shown an increase. It is good news for Radio Mirchi all the way and Radio City follows closely.

Nisha Narayanan is a Media Consultant with wide experience in TV and Radio. She is excited about the impending explosion in FM stations, but cautions that it’s not a good thing for the largest networks to go in for similar content across the country. It may appear to be a cheaper option but may turn listeners off FM altogether.

<p align=justify>Private FM radio is a three-year old medium, and with more than 330 licences being issued in 90 cities, FM as a medium will gain more acceptability and popularity. Consumers will get more entertainment choice, while advertisers will get an additional vehicle to reach their consumers. For existing players, the need to differentiate and stay ahead of the competition will be of utmost importance when the market opens up.

With this ENIL plans to raise Rs 194 crore at the upper end of the price band.
