Distribution remains the trickiest of all functions for Indian television broadcasters. Digitisation of distribution platforms was supposed to be the answer to reducing dependence on ad revenues and leading to subscription. But instead, broadcasters have added another complication to the list. It is this slow takeoff of digital distribution platforms that has become one of the key reasons that have kept television behind mediums such as print and online when it comes to specialised content.

If your heart skipped a beat thinking where you were when the Indian advertising industry became Rs 55,000 crore, relax – some of the latest industry studies still put the current industry size at much less than half that number. It is only when we see the account sizes suggested for some of the businesses like government initiatives or PSUs or educational institutions or other such not-heard-of-much accounts, one gets the impression that that is where the Indian ad industry size would have reached by now.

Telecom major Bharti Airtel has put its mammoth media business up for review and has invited leading agencies to participate in the process. Unlike the traditional route, where the outdoor medium is pitched independently, Airtel pitch has been called for all mediums. As is known, Madison Media was the incumbent on the business for mediums such as TV, print and radio; the outdoor business was handled by GroupM. The account size is pegged in the vicinity of Rs 350-400 crore.

India TV recently completed five years, and the way the channel’s Managing Director Ritu Dhawan sees it, India TV is in its youth now. To signify this on-screen, the channel donned a new look on January 21, 2010. Dhawan explained that the effort this time was to infuse science in the creative process. After ‘Vogue’ and ‘GQ’, Conde Nast India has announced its third title, ‘Conde Nast Traveller’, which the group plans to launch in October 2010. In a conversation with exchange4media, Nicholas Coleridge, Vice-President, Conde Nast International, informed that following this, the group would step up its focus on its digital offering. Coleridge stated that Conde Nast had been ahead of its plans in India, and remained very optimistic in its expectations from this market.

Viacom18 has announced some key changes in its organisation structure. Rajesh Kamat has been promoted to the position of Chief Operating Officer of the Viacom18 Group. Ashish Patil is moved from MTV to Kamat’s team as Sr. VP- New Ventures and GM - Youth Movies. INX Media’s Vikas Verma has joined Viacom18’s youth channel, as the head of Creative & Content – brand MTV.

Yashraj Films (YRF) has taken the fourth key milestone in its 38-year old journey by entering the television domain through its newly launched division YRF TV. Following months of speculation, NDTV and Turner finally announced their decision to enter a deal where Turner would acquire 76 per cent of NDTV Imagine for $67 million. This, combined with the subscription of fresh shares in the company for an addition $50 million, would take Turner’s stake in Imagine to over 90 per cent. NDTV officials inform that the activities of the last two months have made NDTV a “debt-free and a cash rich” company. This move also reiterates Turner’s aggression to be in this space in India.

In the wake of a multi-agency pitch, OMD India has added the media mandate for Danone to its client portfolio. Danone, that has brands such as Evian, Activia, Actimel and Volvic, among others, is foraying into the Indian market. Round 2 of the Indian Readership Survey (IRS) 2009 is out. According to the survey, in an absolute sense, there are no surprises in the top order of the average issue readership (AIR) numbers of dailies. Publications that ruled the chart in R1 of IRS 2009 continue to lead in this round as well. The encouraging news comes in the top 10, where unlike various other rounds, many publications have shown growth. However, one step deeper, and with the exception of one publication, all dailies from position 10 to 20 have dropped.
