NRS 2006 definitely didn’t hold good news for The Times of India at the national level, given the paper’s overall readership declining to 75 lakh. However, the big news is that it has toppled its long-time rival Hindustan Times from the numero uno readership position in Delhi for the first time. TOI is now the supremo in both Mumbai and Delhi. Not only has TOI grown in the Mumbai market -- despite the entry of HT and DNA -- its year-old sibling, Mumbai Mirror, is flaunting some good numbers as well.

The revelation had generated a movement of its own in the broadcast fraternity when NRS 2005 showed an increase in cable and satellite (C&S) households, wherein the number grew from 25 million to over 60 million. NRS 2006 shows a further 12 per cent increase in C&S households, with the figure now standing at 68 million.

The top-line findings of the National Readership Survey (NRS) 2006 have thrown some interesting results for print players. Among dailies, the leadership positions haven’t seen much change – Dainik Jagran leads the Hindi pack and the Times of India leads the English pack. However, vernacular dailies have grown where English have stagnated.

Mainstream magazines have witnessed a consistent readership decline for some time now. The NRS 2006 findings are no different. Also, NRSC has decided to withhold India Today (Hindi)’s figures for revalidation, making Saras Salil the No. 1 player with a readership of 7,139,000. India Today (English) retained its No. 2 position.
