I&B Ministry issues show cause notice to Red FM for racist remarks

Hardly had the euphoria over Prashant Tamang being declared ‘Indian Idol’ died down when RJ Nitin’s comments on Tamang aired on Red FM set the hills literally on fire. The I&B Ministry has not taken too kindly to the comments and has issued a show cause notice to Red FM, giving the FM station time till 4 pm on October 1 to explain why action should not be taken against it.

AROI to create self-regulatory Content Code for private FM radio

The Association of Radio Operators of India (AROI) has announced the formation of an Advisory Committee for the creation of a self-regulatory content code for private FM radio broadcasting in India. AROI’s draft guidelines for the self-regulatory Content Code would be presented to the I&B Ministry-instituted committee for consideration while formulating the report on Content Code to the Government.

The MRUC has released the findings of a Radio Pilot it had undertaken to study the Diary versus Day-after-Recall (DAR) methodologies. As per the findings, the Diary method reports higher listenership across time bands, but at the cost of accuracy. The DAR methodology, though not entirely accurate, scores significantly in capturing accurate listenership behaviour.

News may be allowed on private FM radio under a watchdog’s vigil

The Government of India may finally allow news and current affairs to be aired on private FM, but under a watchdog’s vigil. I&B Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi noted that the matter is presently under consideration and the Government would like to have the views of the State Governments too on this issue.

A circular from the I&B Ministry has reiterated that the clause of Grant of Permission Agreement to FM radio stations was not being followed. It said that news should not be a part of any FM station. The Ministry, the circular stated, had of late noted that certain FM radio stations had indulged in news and current affairs related snippets.

Sun TV buys 48.9% stake in Red FM

Sun TV Network has informed Bombay Stock Exchange that the company, through its subsidiary, South Asia FM Ltd (SAFL), has entered into a strategic alliance with Red FM to further its FM radio broadcasting business in the North, West and East Indian markets. As part of the transaction, SAFL has taken up a 48.9 per cent stake in Red FM.
