The 16 week RAM data for the Kolkata market shows that Radio Mirchi has continued to maintain its leadership position in the Eastern metro, followed by Big FM and Friends FM. Amaar FM has emerged in the fourth position this year.

Going by the 15-week trend of RAM data in the Bangalore market, Big FM has emerged as the clear leader, followed by Radio Mirchi. However, it is the third slot that is seeing a tough fight between Radio One, Fever FM, Radio City and even AIR FM1 Rainbow.

The sixth Mirchi Kaan Awards has received around 750 entries across 15 categories, which is more or less the same as last year’s numbers. The Mirchi Kaan Awards 2009 will be presented in Mumbai on May 8, 2009. According to the jury, the quality of radio advertising has also remained the same as last year.

The economic slowdown has not left the Indian FM radio industry untouched. However, unlike most sectors, there haven’t been reports of largescale downsizing or paycuts in the FM sector so far. Nevertheless, various FM players have now put on hold fresh recruitments and are resorting to other cost-saving measures.

Red FM has maintained its leadership position in Mumbai. As per RAM data, Red FM on week 13 led the FM pack with a 16 per cent market share. Radio Mirchi follows with 14.4 per cent share and Fever FM with 13.9 per cent market share. While AIR FM2 Gold and Big FM shared the fourth slot, Radio City saw a decline in its ratings.

Smaller FM stations are finding allies in like-minded larger FM players to expand their base, especially through consolidation of sales forces, which give the former an opportunity to reach out to national clients.

Radio Mirchi and Red FM had a busy weekend organising the Tata Indicom Mirchi Music Awards and the Bajaate Raho Awards 2008, respectively. Both these Awards served different purposes.

HT Media Ltd on March 26 said that it had received Delhi High Court’s approval for demerger of its radio business, known for its FM channel Fever 104, from its subsidiary HT Music and Entertainment Company and merge it with itself.

In the early days of radio, it was seen as a medium for dissemination of information, and there was always a community which wanted to propagate radio as part of the media plan. Today, things have changed. Radio is part of majority of the clients. The way they look at radio is also different. However, I feel it is still a challenge for many to understand how to use radio effectively.

The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting has signed a grant of permission agreement for establishing, maintaining and operating community radio stations at Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Babhaleshwar in Ahmednagar district in Maharashtra. Meanwhile, Himachal Pradesh has got its first wireless community radio station in Solan district.

The jury panel for the 6th Mirchi KAAN Awards was announced on February 26, which comprises many from the creative field. The last date for receiving entries for the 6th Mirchi KAAN Awards is February 28, 2009. All radio spots aired between January 1, 2008 and December 31, 2008, are eligible to take part.

FM stations are going all out to celebrate Valentine’s Day – while Red FM’s RJ Malishka goes ‘deewana’, Radio City is associating itself with Force India. Radio Mirchi is out to get together all the ‘single and ready to mingle’ people, while My FM is airing romantic songs from the 70s through 2008, and Fever FM has its own ‘Fever Romeo’.

Fever FM would break even in the last quarter of this year, this was shared by Ian Grace, President, Virgin Radio, with exchange4media in an exclusive conversation. Moreover, Fever FM would stay away from Phase III expansion if it only focused on small towns and cities.

The Andhra Pradesh High Court’s order, dated February 6, 2009, has given some respite to Apurva Purohit, CEO, Radio City. The Metropolitatan Magistrate of Hyderabad had issued a non-bailable warrant against Purohit for infringement of Copyright Act on February 6, 2009. The Andhra Pradesh High Court has now ordered a stay on the execution of this warrant.

When there are too many players in the market, consolidation is bound to happen in order to sustain. The same was true for the not so long ago airlines boom in our country. You can expect consolidation in the Chennai FM market, too, and that will happen very soon.

Radio Misty launched its Gangtok station on Saturday, January 31, 2009. With this launch, the FM station completes the two licenses in Phase II expansion. Radio Misty is embarking on a 360-degree marketing campaign for which it has earmarked a campaign budget of Rs 7 lakh over three months.

Entertainment Network India Ltd (ENIL), which operated private FM stations under the Radio Mirchi brand, has reported a 39.6 per cent drop in its standalone Q3 net profit to Rs 4.86 crore as against Rs 8.05 crore in Q3 of FY08. The standalone revenues also fell 11.5 per cent from Rs 67.8 crore to Rs 60.0 crore in Q3 ended December 31, 2008.
