Parveen Ahluwalia has taken charge as Group CEO of Silicon Biztech (SBT), a global software development and IT outsourcing major headquartered in Gurgaon. Ahluwalia began his career in 1987 in Operations Research Group (ORG, now ACNielsen), spending five years there before heading the brand planning function in advertising for more than 12 years in leading agencies, including TBWA Anthem, Rediffusion DY&R and Frank Simoes Advertising. Subsequently, he relocated to Chennai in February 2002 to head the marketing and business development function for India and South East Asia of Cactus Imaging Pte, one of the world’s largest digital printing majors for three years before relocating back to home base, Delhi, in 2005. Prior to taking over his new role at Silicon Biztech, Ahluwalia was a practicing brand consultant in marketing communications for more than three years.

Endemol India has appointed Rajesh Chadha as Director – Production and Operation. Chadha will be responsible for the overall production activities of the company that will comprise a gamut of fiction, non-fiction, regional, sports and documentary. He will be reporting to Deepak Dhar, Country Head, Endemol India. Prior to joining Endemol India, Chadha was with BAG Films as Senior Vice President & Head of Operations. During his 15-year association with BAG Films, he had handled a wide variety of genres, including game shows, daily soaps, reality shows and weekly dramas.

Rediffusion Y&R Mumbai has roped in Anurag Tandon as Business Head on the key businesses of Colgate-Palmolive and Himalayan. Tandon comes on board from TBWA\India, where he was Associate Vice-President and handled clients like Nivea, Bajaj Allianz, Samsonite, Set Max, Platinum Guild and Playstation. In his earlier stints, Tandon has worked with Leo Burnett and O&M, where he had worked on clients like P&G, Bajaj Auto, Fiat, IDBI. He began his career in 2000 as a management trainee at RK Swamy BBDO Advertising.

Tequila\India is high on the TBWA\India agenda in 2009. Even as TBWA\India Group’s CEO Shiv Sethuraman is clear that Tequila would remain an integrated unit of the overall TBWA\India P&L, he informed that the company would be “investing aggressively” in Tequila to grow it in Mumbai and Delhi. The agency has recently appointed John Mathew as Tequila’s MD and NCD.

The Hindi movie channels genre has had an interesting run in 2008. Even as the Indian Premier League redefined cricket and delivered unexpected numbers for Max, most Hindi movie channels played the old titles game. However, newcomer UTV Movies may just turn out to be a game-changer going forward, if its strategy of premiering new movies pays off.

Mahuaa TV, the Bhojpuri GEC that was launched in August 2008, has appointed Ogilvy & Mather India as its creative agency, while Motivator has been assigned its media duties. The incumbent agencies for the creative and media duties are AMO and Integrid Media, respectively. Sources at Mahuaa TV have confirmed the development.

The year 2008 has been about consolidation for the Mudra Group. Mudra added various specialised units in the year such as Water, Terra, Celsius and 10 Integrated. Adding to this, the Group has plans to launch a retail unit, and a business analytics and consulting unit before March 2009. Mudra is looking at launching these units through the international joint ventures and acquisitions route to ensure “the right skill set”.

I think there are no mantras for what to do or how to do best. But… introspection is a good starting point. If your system is over-heated, it is time to cool it down. When you are on a steep growth curve, you turn a blind eye to a lot that is happening in the organisation. A downturn is a good time for a reality check. That reality check covers people, processes, relationships, visioning, investments… When you pull back, and if you are honest, there are enough areas for re-evaluation and re-assessment.
