As part of its social commitments, Tata Group is creating a corpus of Rs 1-1.2 crore to support the cause of ‘Save The Children India’ (STCI) and will be jointly setting up ‘Balvadis’ across Mumbai. Tata Group and Save The Children India will present a concert by A R Rahman – ‘I Believe… a better world is possible’ on January 26, 2004. This is in league of its own concert by the musical genius and STCI’s new brand ambassador.

POGO, the new television channel for kids, will premiere the blockbuster movie Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, for the first time on Indian television. The movie will be telecast exclusively on POGO to coincide with the 2004 summer holidays. The film was acquired by POGO from Warner Bros International Television Distribution.

Although there’s a view within the government that ‘news’ should not be permitted in private FM radio, citing security concerns, the Cabinet decision may go against this thinking. Even as the information and broadcasting ministry is finalising its recommendations for the second phase of FM radio privatisation, government sources said ‘news’ is likely to be allowed, despite objections from certain quarters. So far, news is not permitted in private FM radio.

The television broadcasting industry, which had remained outside the purview of regulation so far, is upset over the diktat issued by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) on freezing the monthly tariffs, as charged by broadcasters, large cable networks and last-mile operators. At the board meeting of the Indian Broadcasting Foundation (IBF) here on Tuesday, top officials of TV channels finalised a letter to Trai chairman Pradip Baijal, underscoring their concerns.

Despite being in its infancy, the brand is expected to contribute nearly one-third to the total Titan revenue. The industry buzz has it. Speculation is rife that the Samsung account is likely to shift to Cheil Communications (which is the integrated communications subsidiary of Samsung) from March 31, 2004. Though Samsung’s spokesperson denied any such move, the industry still believes that it is inevitable.

On December 22, 2003, the Delhi High Court had directed NRSC not to release NRS 2003 till further notification. Feedback Communications had filed a writ petition against the directive in the Supreme Court. The petition came up for hearing on January 12, 2004. However, the Supreme Court then sent the case back to the divisional branch of Delhi High Court hoping and expecting a speedy judgement or directive on the case.

LG Care has appointed Everest as its creative agency for the soon to be launched toothpastes, soaps, detergents, shampoos and diapers. There will be about 25 variants in all categories. The pitch lasted two months, and the contract was officially signed on January 15, 2004. LG Care is looking at an annual adspend of above Rs 30 crore. The product line targets the premium segment and LG Care hopes to garner 2% to 3% market share in the upper crust by the end of the current financial year. Pitches are currently on for both AOR and PR. The results are likely to be announced in the next 15 days.

I think PR summits/conferences are still at a nascent stage in India and we have a long way to go before these summits become a ‘must attend’ for PR professionals.
