Magazine publishers have always decried the results of the Indian Readership Survey (IRS), stating that the numbers are not always representative of the actual readership. While there is still uncertainty on which is the most relevant metric – AIR or TR – for measurement of magazine readership, the question also arises on how magazines that are not registered with the MRUC get measured.

Well known journalist and Editor (Languages) at the India Today Group, Prabhu Chawla, is set to move out of the group. Industry sources have confirmed that Chawla is joining The New Indian Express newspaper. While it is not known what would be Chawla’s designation, he will be replacing Aditya Sinha, who is joining DNA as Editor-in-Chief from January 17, 2011.

Readership measurement comes in for intense scrutiny every time the IRS (Indian Readership Survey) results are released. Every round there is a fight on whether Average Issue Readership (AIR) or Total Readership (TR) is the more relevant metric. And while the debate still rages on, AIR is still winning.

Not much change is seen in readership trends of newspapers in the state of Orissa in the IRS Q3 2010 results. Oriya daily Sambad continues as the leading newspaper in the state, while The Times of India has maintained its lead among English publications.

Newspapers in Bangalore have witnessed mostly positive growth as per the IRS Q3 2010 results. Nine of the top 12, including English and Kannada language dailies, have seen healthy growth in readership. English daily Bangalore Mirror has seen a massive double digit growth of 71 per cent in AIR as against the Q2 results.

Hindi fortnightly ‘Sarita’, the flagship magazine from Delhi Press Group, is set to hit newsstands in a new avatar from January 2011 onwards. In a bid to attract young readers and advertisers, the magazine is undergoing a design change and has adopted a new tagline: ‘Har Pal Yuva’. Meanwhile, the Group has appointed Triton to handle its ad campaigns.

Amid sporadic curfews and a ban on newspapers for some time, publications in Jammu and Kashmir operate under probably some of the toughest market conditions in India. It’s a mixed bag for both dailies and magazines in the state. While the top two dailies have seen a decline in AIR, The Times of India has recorded the highest growth.

Dailies in Himachal Pradesh have mostly seen growth in AIR as per the IRS Q3 2010 results. Amar Ujala overtakes Punjab Kesari to claim the top spot among dailies. While Hindi dailies have seen mixed results, English dailies have whipped up mostly double digit growth in the third quarter.

The IRS Q3 2010 results bring no cheer for the dailies in Chandigarh. Some time back Hindi daily Hindustan had terminated its Chandigarh edition due to decreasing readership trends, the situation hasn’t improved for most dailies, which have seen sharp drop in readership in this quarter.

Both newspapers and magazines have mostly recorded growth in readership in Uttar Pradesh as per the IRS Q3 2010 results. While all top five dailies have seen growth in AIR, four of the top five magazines have recorded growth in AIR, beating the general decline trend seen in magazines nationally.

Most dailies have seen a decline in readership in the Punjab market. Of the top 15 dailies, nine have seen a drop in AIR as per the IRS Q3 2010 results. Punjabi daily Ajit has retained its leadership position with a marginal growth. Punjab Kesari is the most read Hindi daily in the state, while The Tribune is the most read English daily.

Newspapers in Uttarakhand have seen some interesting trends in the IRS Q3 2010 results. While the old Hindi newspaper players of the state, Amar Ujala and Dainik Jagran, have witnessed decline in their readership, Hindustan has seen double digit growth in its readership in the third quarter.

Dailies have been able to chart a growth story in Madhya Pradesh, with just three of the top 15 papers showing a decline in AIR as per the IRS Q3 2010 results. Hindi dailies rule in the state, with The Times of India, the top English daily in the state, coming in at No. 9 in the overall top 15 list.

Oriya dailies have slightly improved their performance in IRS Q3 2010, as against the Q2 results. Two of the top five dailies have seen growth in readership in this quarter, as against four of the top five dailies registering a negative growth in Q2.

Dailies in the Andhra Pradesh market have not put up a good show as per the IRS Q3 results, with six of the top 10 dailies seeing a drop in AIR. While Telugu daily Eenadu leads the field, Deccan Chronicle is the most read English daily. The paper is placed fourth in the overall list.

Jharkhand, the most lucrative market for Hindi newspapers in recent times, has seen a robust readership growth as per the IRS Q3 2010 results, released on December 2, 2010. Nearly all top Hindi dailies have witnessed strong double digit growth in readership as compared to the Q2 results.

There was no cheer for both Tamil dailies and magazines in the IRS Q3 2010 results. All top five Tamil dailies have seen negative growth in readership in this quarter. Among magazines, 14 of the top 15 magazines have seen decline in the Average Issue Readership (AIR).

Unlike the IRS Q2 2010 results, Hindi newspapers in Chhattisgarh have put better show in Q3. Four of the top five Hindi newspapers have seen growth in AIR. While Dainik Bhaskar continues to lead among Hindi dailies, it has seen a decline in AIR. The Times of India is the most read English newspaper in Chhattisgarh.

There was much cheer in the IRS Q3 2010 results for Telugu publications. Both dailies and magazines have done better than in the second quarter. While Telugu dailies have mostly seen positive growth trend, three of top five magazine have seen growth in readership.

Language dailies in Mumbai have witnessed mixed results in the IRS Q3 2010 results, which were released on December 2, 2010. Seven out of top ten language publications have witnessed positive growth in Average Issue Readership (AIR) as compared to the Q2 results.

As compared to the previous results, 13 of the top 15 dailies have reported growth in readership. Among the top ten Hindi dailies, Haribhoomi and NaiDunia have seen double digit growth in readership.

Decline trend in Average Issue Readership (AIR) continues to plague Hindi magazines as per the IRS Q3 2010 results. Only two magazines – Pratiyogita Darpan and Manohar Kahaniyan – among the top 15 Hindi magazines have registered positive growth in AIR.

As in the case of Hindi dailies, Hindi magazines, too, saw mixed results in the Delhi and Delhi NCR markets as per the IRS Q3 2010 results. Five out of the top ten Hindi magazines have seen positive growth in AIR. Grih Shobha and Grehlakshmi remain the top two magazines in both the markets.

At a meeting of the Kashmir Press Association (KPA), held in Srinagar on November 25, 2010, it was decided that Ghulam Hassan Kaloo would continue as the President of the body for the next three years. However, the decision of conducting the elections of this body was also taken at the meeting and the whole KPA body has been disbanded till the elections.
