Ambikanand Sahay, who was heading the news business of the Sahara Group, including television and print, has resigned. When contacted by exchange4media, Sahay said, “Yes, I have quit as of yesterday.” He refused to divulge any further details.

In keeping with the latest NRS 2005 findings that showed a substantial surge in the size of the television and satellite universe, as well as apprehensions expressed in some quarters regarding the sample size of its data, TAM Media Research has decided to more than double its TV panel, from the existing 4,800 Peoplemeters to 10,300 Peoplemeters. It also plans to launch an Elite Panel service for upscale homes by the end of this year.

The Indian mobile handset market was worth Rs 8,805 crore in '04-05. A lion's share of this - 84% - were GSM handsets at Rs 7,384 crore with Nokia alone accounting for a whopping 62.3% marketshare. According to a report by Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) quoting a Voice & Data report of June 2005, the share of GSM handsets was even higher than the GSM connections which stood at 75% for the same period.

The Videocon group today announced that it would be acquiring Thomson SA's global colour picture-tube manufacturing business, including units in China, Poland, and Mexico for 240 million euros (approximately Rs 1,260 crore). The purchase follows Videocon's agreement earlier this year to buy Thomson's Italian tube factory.

Advertising spending will hit $145.3 billion this year, according to a TNS Media Intelligence forecast presented at the annual AdWatch conference in Manhattan this morning. TNS president and CEO Steven Fredericks predicted that ad spending would be up 3.4 per cent over last year, although that's a fraction of the 9.8 per cent rate at which it grew in 2004.

Ananda Vikatan, the Tamil weekly, has a new editor. Balasubramanian, 70, has handed the editorial reins of the flagship Ananda Vikatan to Asokan, a product of the publication’s ‘Student Reporter Scheme.’ He joined the group in 1987. Asokan was Executive Editor of the group. However, Balasubramanian continues as Editor of Junior Vikatan.
