ESPN STAR Sports today demanded an unqualified public apology from Zee Telefilms and its Chairman Subhash Chandra for the “irresponsible statements made to the media”, failing which it has threatened to take legal action for “defamation and slander”. This demand has come even as Zee Telefilms filed a writ in the Supreme Court this morning challenging the cancellation of the cricket telecast contract.

Bullish on the Indian market, digital imaging company Canon India Pvt Ltd has rolled out an aggressive strategy to capture 30 per cent of the digital camera market by 2007. The strategy includes the launch of seven digital cameras, three video DV camcorders and one SLR angle zoom lens for both the consumer and professional segments.

Telecom service provider, Reliance Infocomm is targeting to launch its CDMA mobile service in over 3,600 towns over the next 90 to 120 days. It is present in over 1,100 towns with a subscriber base of 8.3 million.

India’s state-owned petroleum companies are borrowing a leaf from a paint company’s memorable ad campaign some years ago (“Whenever you think of colour, think of us”). From December, several existing petrol stations will sport these colours on everything, from signages to canopies, as part of an image improvement, makeover and differentiator exercise.

With at least two DTH service providers having rolled out their operations, the battle for the DTH market is heating up. As Doordarshan and the Zee group’s DTH services (under ASC Enterprises) move to sew up the market, the Star group’s DTH venture with the Tatas is waiting in the wings.

Zee Network has absorbed old ESPN-hand Gaurav Seth as the Marketing Head for Zee Sports. Ashish Kaul (Vice President, Corporate Brand Development, Zee Network) has confirmed the move. The channel is awaiting formal launch on October 2.

RK Swamy/BBDO and Mode are the new agencies appointed by Indian Airlines (IA) on its panel of agencies, according to informed sources. The other two agencies on the panel of four are Bates India and Adfactors, both of which have been retained from the previous panel. Grey Worldwide (India) and Akshara are the two agencies which do not find a place this time.

The mother of all programme acquisition battles is far from over. Under pressure from Zee Telefilms and ESPN-STAR Sports, as well as the ICC and Cricket Australia, BCCI appears to be tying itself in knots. On Tuesday, it told the Bombay High Court that it was cancelling the tendering process. While ESPN promptly withdrew its writ, an agitated Zee camp has decided to approach the Supreme Court claiming malafide.
