Yahoo! reported strong first-quarter 2004 results -- the company's best quarter ever -- underlining, perhaps, marketers' increasing comfort with the Internet as an advertising-supported marketplace. Web giant reported net income of $101 million compared with $47 million for the same period last year. Revenues jumped 168% to $758 million from $283 million for the previous period.

The country's largest two-wheeler manufacturer, Hero Honda Motors has announced a 25 per cent increase in net profits at Rs 728.3 crore in 2003-04 from Rs 581 crore in the previous fiscal, and also a massive 1000 per cent total dividend for the year. The company's net sales surged by 14.3 per cent to Rs 5,832 crore during the fiscal as against Rs 5,101 crore in the previous year.

Madura Garments, part of the Aditya-Birla group, expects to maintain the growth momentum during the current fiscal. It aims to extend its brands to wardrobe brands and then to lifestyle brands. According to sources, the company plans to invest 8-9 per cent of its turnover on brand building.

Attorney general Soli J Sorabjee on Monday submitted before a Supreme Court bench that a mechanism to monitor the contents of political advertisements was needed to check the telecast of offensive and slanderous advertisements. Such a mechanism would restrict the television channels from telecasting such commercials, he said. The final hearing on this by the Supreme Court will be held today.

The ban on cigarette advertising from May 1 has prompted market leaders ITC and Godfrey Phillips India (GPI) to launch new brands in April itself. Though the companies insist that they had always planned the launches in April, it is likely that they want to get the last bit of advertising mileage for the new brands before the ban becomes effective.
