Indian telecom operators could see almost three-fold jump in revenues — from $9 billlion in 2002 to $25 billion by 2007, according to a study released by Ernst &Young. As per the study the Indian telecom network will become the second largest in the world after China in the next five years.

Fast moving consumer goods major Procter & Gamble (P&G) is hopeful that its price reduction strategy will deliver results, similar to what it witnessed last September, when the company had announced price cuts on detergents. The company’s sachet volumes had nearly doubled after the prices were slashed in September. The price of Ariel sachet was reduced to Rs 1.50 and that on Tide was cut to Re 1.

Parasar Bharati has written to the Union information and broadcating ministry that it will no longer give free airtime on its 20-odd Doordarshan channels to political parties for campaigning for the coming general elections. Instead, parties should pay for buying time on the channels, said the proposal.

Broadcast regulator Trai will seek a review of the ex-parte stay by Madras high court on Centre’s notification indefinitely suspending implementation of conditional access system (CAS), with chairman Pradip Baijal saying that Trai had approached the court to be heard on the issue before the stay was awarded.

Hyderabad based Vaarttha newspaper has launched three new editions taking its total in Andhra Pradesh to 19 editions. As per Gireesh Sanghi, Chairman and MD, Vaarttha, this brings them at par with Eenadu in terms of the number of editions. Interestingly, the paper’s expansion plans don’t end here. By May 2004, it will publish four metro editions and come July, the much spoken-about Telugu news channel will hit the tube.

South African Tourism has kicked off an initiative in the run-up to 10 years of freedom. The organisation has planned several events and activities, including the ‘Come and Play in South Africa’ campaign. TBWA Mumbai has bagged the advertising responsibilities for this campaign. The three-month project is pegged at Rs 4 crore. The objective behind this campaign is to increase awareness of various characteristics about South Africa among Indian tourists.

In a manner we are in the entertainment business. When we entered the market, we were aware of the fact that two things that drive Indian viewers are movies and cricket. Everything else from politics to any other interest is a mere add on. This is a fact we leveraged to our brand’s positioning and it is paying off.
