Cookme Spices has embarked on a promotional spree of its range of ready masalas. The press and television promotion will use the (Bengali) catchline <I>Ektu khani Cookme, anek khani jiban</I> (Just a little Cookme, and a lot of life). “The line was adopted to convey the purity of the Cookme range,” Srenik Sett, who has been managing the account, said. The advertising will be accompanied by door-to-door promotion of the range and distribution of recipe booklets with purchases.

P C Chandra Jewellers, one of the biggest players in the Rs 1,000 crore jewellery market in Kolkata, has embarked on a Rs 1-crore promotion of its Gold Lite range of super light 22-carat jewellery. The promotion will use television and outdoor hoardings to familiarize the market with the new range.

Weathering the pesticide controversy and much ahead of the summer season, soft drink majors have initiated a fresh price war. Taking the lead, this time is PepsiCo India which has dropped prices of its 300ml returnable glass bottles (RGB) from Rs 8 to Rs 6 in Delhi. Arch rival Coca-Cola India’s move to join Pepsi in the price war is not known as yet. However, Coke had already cut price of its acquired brand ThumsUp from Rs 8 to Rs 6 last month in Tamil Nadu.

Richard D Parsons, chairman and chief executive officer (CEO), Time Warner Inc, the world’s largest media and entertainment company, will be in India on a day long visit early next week. Industry sources describe the visit as a prelude to the company’s increased investment in the country, while Time Warner sources describe it as a routine visit.

IBM has decided to consolidate all of its direct marketing business with Ogilvy One Worldwide, globally. IBM issued a statement that says, “As part of IBM’s ongoing consolidation and strategic streamlining of its marketing communications support, the company will move all of its direct marketing work to the Ogilvy network.” The relation between IBM and Ogilvy is a decade old when the company had decided to consolidate its entire global advertising business with Ogilvy.

Corporate Giant Britannia is paving the way for a media pitch and is in the process of inviting agencies to participate in it. As per sources, the corporate giant is in the process of shortlisting the agencies. Key officials in Britannia, however, refuse to ascertain the same. As per unconfirmed sources, the agencies which have so far been shortlisted include the three incumbents — Initiative, Madison, Mediacom , in addition to Media Edge and MPG.

I think our industry has spoilt the reader to an extent that we are forced to depend solely on our advertisers. But what the reader doesn’t realize is that he is getting an inferior product as the content is sometimes compromised. I think the biggest issue faced by the industry is that we are heavily under priced.
