Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd is set to launch SMS facilities on its landlines for its customers in Mumbai. Over 100 exchanges in the city are being "tweaked" for this purpose. The SMS facility itself would be free of charge while the user will be charged for one local call for use of the phone for the facility.

As the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare's notification on PFA norms for packaged drinking water come into effect beginning January 1, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has amended the Indian Standards of packaged drinking water in order to align with the revised PFA norms. However, loopholes still remain in the system.

Despite sending strong signals that conditional access system is headed nowhere, the government is yet to say ‘no’ to CAS. Meanwhile, CAS came into full play on New Year’s day, with all pay channels being switched off in most cable homes in the first zone of Delhi. In another fortnight or so, the government is expected to take a call on the issue, according to highly-placed sources. Till then, consumers have to live in suspended animation.

Pay channel prices are set to go up with the major broadcasters planning a revision in the rate structure, a move which could fuel further volatility in the highly charged cable TV industry. STAR India has asked cable TV operators to increase their declaration of subscriber base by 58 per cent to enjoy a price cut of Rs 3 a month per subscriber with effect from January 1.

Even as the uncertainty over the fate of the conditional access system (CAS) rollout in Delhi looms large, the Centre is fine-tuning a legislation to set up an interim regulator for the television broadcasting sector. The interim watchdog—a stop-gap arrangement till a permanent mechanism is put in place—will have the prime responsibility to monitor the cable distribution business.

It all began mid last-year when the channel applied for permission to uplink from India and government detected loopholes in the application.
