India@Spikes Asia: India sends the highest entries; not many delegates on day one
Spikes Asia 2010 kicked off on September 19 at the Suntec Convention Centre in Singapore. The event has seen an increase of 14 per cent in entries for awards this year, while the number of delegates has also gone up from the 960 last year to over 1,300 delegates. India has sent the highest number of entries this year. Festival Chairman Terry Savage said in a conversation with exchange4media that the event has begun as per expectations.

And it is Spikes Asia time again. The regional advertising festival, which was re-launched in 2009 as a collaborative initiative of the organisers of Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival and Haymarket Group, kicked off at the Suntec Convention Centre in Singapore on September 19, 2010. Festival Chairman Terry Savage said in a conversation with exchange4media that Spikes Asia 2010 had been begun as per expectations.
There has been an increase of 14 per cent in the number of entries for awards this year. In comparison to the 2,685 entries last year, this year Spikes Asia received 3,058 entries. Some categories that have seen an increase in the number of entries this year include TV/Cinema, Direct and Sales Promotion, Media, Radio, Design, TV/Cinema Craft, Integrated and Digital.
Print, Outdoor and Print Craft have seen a drop in entries this year.
The highest number of entries has come from India. Last year, Indian agencies had sent 321 entries and this year India has sent 452 entries. Singapore is the second largest with 379 entries. Japan has sent 333 entries this year, while Australia has sent 309 entries.
Last year was also when Indian agencies had won 41 awards at Spikes Asia. Prior to that, India’s Spikes count was as low as 11 awards in 2008 and 19 in 2007.
Spikes Asia has once again allowed Australia and New Zealand to compete at the Festival. The two markets were taken off at the time of the relaunch last year.
The number of delegates has also increased this year from the 960 last year. The pre-registered number of delegates for Spikes Asia 2010 is at 1,300, but Savage informed that the event typically saw spot registration too and that the number was set to increase on day two – September 20, 2010. The event has decreased the delegate registration fees this year, saying that the intention was to provide a broader spectrum of people.
Not many delegates from India were seen on the first day of the event though. Some faces included Bates 141’s Sagar Mahabaleshwarkar, Xebec’s Kiran Bhat, Tiger Advertising’s Mihir Shah and Pantul Kothari. Colvyn Harris, CEO, JWT India, Ajay Kakar, CMO, Aditya Birla Group – Financial Services and Srinivasan Swamy, Chairman and CEO, RK Swamy Hansa Group were also seen discussing their session at the Festival on September 21, 2010. Jury members Bates 141’s Sonal Dabral and Good Morning Films’ Shashank Chaturvedi (Bob) also made an appearance at the networking session of the first day.
Spikes Asia has packed in a lot for September 20 and September 21, 2010. The Speakers’ line-up for September 20, 2010 includes Sir Martin Sorrell, CEO, WPP; Tony Fernandes, Group CEO, AirAsia; Howard Draft, Executive Chairman, Draftfcb; Mark Tutssel, Chief Creative Officer, Leo Burnett Worldwide; Bob Jeffrey, Chairman and CEO, JWT Worldwide; and Bob Greenberg, Chairman, CEO and Global Chief Creative Officer, R/GA USA.
