Choreos 2009: ‘When it comes straight from the heart you can’t go wrong’
It was a big night for GroupM India on October 9, 2009. The company’s inaugural internal awards – Choreos – made celebrities of all the nominees. The GroupM agencies came together in full attendance and were in high spirits as they celebrated the victory of those individuals and teams that manifested the way of working on brands that brought to life the values that GroupM stands for.

The Red Carpet was rolled out for the nominees of GroupM’s inaugural Choreos Awards in Mumbai on October 9, 2009. The winners were announced at a packed ceremony that saw enthusiastic GroupM staff celebrating each others’ achievements. This special internal award was not limited to the Mumbai audience, but was also transmitted live at GroupM’s offices around India.
The Awards ceremony was hosted by Vikram Sathe, a stand-up comedian who left the audience in splits, mimicking cricketers and actors. The evening also saw fillers by another stand-up comedian Papa CJ, and a special performance by ventriloquist Paul Zerdin.
An ecstatic Vikram Sakhuja, CEO - South Asia, GroupM, said, “It was a truly wonderful evening. When it comes straight from the heart, you can’t go wrong. I would say it surpassed all expectations. Choreos is a celebration of our talent that exemplifies GroupM’s core values and the teams that deliver breakthrough work.”
In all, 10 Choreos Awards were given away – six individual awards, three team awards and one special Jury Choice team award. The individual Choreos were given out in six categories – Breaking New Ground, Power of One, Band of Brothers, Walk the Talk, Great Place to Grow, and Relentless Excellence. Each of these categories was further divided into Jury’s Choice and People’s Choice awards.
exchange4media caught up with some of the winners to share their moment of glory.
VK Grover, who bagged both the People’s Choice and Jury’s Choice awards in the Band of Brothers Category, commented, “It’s a good initiative by GroupM. This initiative motivates each and every member of the GroupM family and was beyond my expectations. I have been in the industry for more than 32 years and the kind of recognition GroupM has set for their staff is remarkable. As for next year, it will more than anybody’s expectation and we all will work towards this recognition.”
Anisha Iyer, who bagged two trophies in the Breaking New Ground and Relentless Excellence categories, was understandably ecstatic. She said, “I feel on top of the world. In fact, I didn’t expect this coming as there have been really good contenders. But it feels great to get two trophies. I have been with GroupM for three years now. In 2008, we got trophies – both international and local – in mobile marketing. I guess this had been my career point. So here, I feel great and appreciated to get awarded with Choreos 2009.”
Zubin Tatna of MEC Access, who bagged the Choreo in the Great Place to Grow category, said, “Any award is a recognition of the work that you do, so getting to do something that you love doing and getting rewarded for it is like three times sweeter. That was what the evening was all about. As for next year, it’s going to be bigger and the fight for being a nominee will be much keener and stronger. Probably, the event shall be on a much larger scale.”
Present at the event were all the heads of GroupM agencies, including Shubha George of MEC, Ajit Varghese of Maxus, Rajul Kulshreshtha of Motivator, Prashanth Kumar of GroupM, R Gowthaman of Mindhsare, T Gangadhar of MEC, and Madhavi Pahwa of GroupM, among others.
In a sense, the rationale behind the awards is in similar vein to what is true of other such recognitions, which is to acknowledge those who bring to life the values that GroupM stands for. However, GroupM officials are clear that the road ahead is about ‘Choreographing Convergence’. The name ‘Choreo’ came into being from this thought, and the Choreos were awarded to those individuals and teams that manifested this way of working through their behaviour and language.

Advertising professional and art collector Swapan Seth has announced the launch of his new book COOL. The book is described as "a ready reckoner to the hip and the happening, of the known and the very unknown."

COOL has been published by Simon & Schuster India and is available on Amazon.
Seth is an ad veteran with a long and illustrious career in the industry. He became the youngest-ever Creative Director at Clarion at age 24. He was VP at 26 at Trikaya Grey. Two years later, he started his agency Equus.
He writes for publications such as The Economic Times, Hindustan Times and India Today. This is his second book and he has previously published THIS IS ALL I HAVE TO SAY.

Disney Star signs 9 sponsors for Asia Cup PAK

e4m Staff Disney Star has signed nine broadcast and digital streaming sponsors for the upcoming Asia Cup.
Charged by Thums Up, Nerolac Paint+, Amazon Pay, Jindal Panther, My11Circle, MRF, Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5, Wild Stone and Thums Up have come on board for the upcoming tournament.
As reported earlier by exchange4media, Disney Star has sought Rs 26 crore for the co-presenting sponsorship on TV and Rs 30 crore for Disney+ Hotstar.
According to industry sources, the associate sponsorship on Star Sports has been priced at Rs 19.66 crore, whereas for the ‘powered by’ sponsorship on Disney+ Hotstar, the broadcaster is seeking Rs 18 crore.
As per the information available with exchange4media, Disney+ Hotstar has three sponsorship tiers-- co-presenting (Rs 30 crore), powered by (Rs 18 crore) and associate sponsorship (Rs 12 crore). The broadcaster is offering an estimated reach of 120-140 million for co-presenting sponsors, 90-100 million for powered by and 60-70 million for associate sponsorship.
A spot buy for 10 seconds has been priced at Rs 25 lakh for the India vs Pakistan matches, while for the non-India matches, the ad rate for 10 second is Rs 2.3 lakh. The India matches plus the final for ODIs has been priced at Rs 17 lakh per 10 seconds.
Asia Cup is scheduled to be held from 30 August, 2023, to September 17, 2023.
