Airwaves to reverberate with woman power on Women’s Day

‘She takes care of herself... She’s ahead of her time... She’s always a woman to me…’, thus crooned Billy Joel, singing paeans to ‘woman’. In today’s world, where every occasion or relationship is marked by a special day (Rose Day anyone?), International Woman’s Day on March 8 assumes a special significance. And FM stations are out to celebrate the day with special programmes, music, contests, interviews and talk shows.

Big FM Delhi would be holding a contest for its female listeners around the 100 Chartbusters being played with the idea of 100 Celebrations for Women. Gifts ranging from kitchen appliances to beauty vouchers would be handed out to the winners to make them feel special and pampered.

Manav Dhanda, National Programming Head, Big FM, said, “Our programming content for Women’s Day has been conceptualised to offer wholesome entertainment mix for our women listeners while not alienating the others. Whether music, jock talk or gratifications, etc, everything is queued to our women listeners’ preferences. We are confident that our listeners are going to thoroughly enjoy our offerings for this special day.”

Radio Mirchi FM would be going all out to pamper some lucky women and give them a break from their daily chores in the form of activities like spa treatments, luncheons, shopping, movies, etc. While the women enjoy their day, their husbands would be given a list of challenging tasks to be completed at home. To monitor their progress, Radio Mirchi RJs would accompany both husbands and wives and constantly update each other. Talk about role reversals.

Srinivasa Shenoy, Cluster Head, Radio Mirchi FM, said, “Women’s Day is an opportunity to appreciate all the women in our lives. We at Radio Mirchi would like to take this opportunity to pamper the fairer sex by organising a special outing that they would never forget. I am confident that our listeners will enjoy and participate actively.”

Fever FM is running a contest named ‘What Women Want’ throughout the week. The show is aimed at men, challenging them on how well they know the women in their lives. Everyday, several times a day, the men are being asked certain questions to test how well they understood, knew and empathised with that special woman in their lives. Each winner is then awarded a Women Quotient (much like IQ or EQ), and at the end of the day, the person with the highest WQ wins a grand prize. The prizes include yearly subscription to ‘Vogue’, jewellery vouchers, etc., that the man can gift his wife.

Gowri Satyamoorthy Kapre, National Marketing and Promotions Head, Fever FM, said, “At Fever FM, we are thrilled with the response that the ‘What Women Want’ promotion is getting on air. Men are competing with each other to prove that they know women better than other men, and the women are laughing all the way with the prizes their men are winning for them. It is proving to be a great way to keep both genders involved with our radio station.”

Radio Mantra FM is airing interviews and discussions on woman-centric issues that primarily encourage woman at Tier III cities and acknowledge them for their achievements in various fields. There are special programmes like ‘Josh Factory’ aired between 7 am and 11 am, which tackles topics like education, career prospects in a primarily male dominant city. ‘Ms Golmaal’ at 11 am-2 pm, where serious issues like breast cancer, gyneacological problems, importance of general hygiene for women are discussed. The programme has a doctor as the guest to answer queries.

Kanwar Sameer, Programming Head, Radio Mantra FM, said, “Radio Mantra’s programming focus has always been on connecting with our listeners and becoming part of their lives. We plan to mark this day by highlighting the contribution made by Indian women at every stage of our lives. ‘Bandi mein hai dum’ is a programme where we will talk about the various roles that a woman plays. And to add a little fun to this entire activity, we will be endorsing ‘Bharatiya naari, akeli sab par bhari’ in a positive way.”

Radio One is running the campaign on Women’s Day led by the male RJs of the FM station, where the female RJs are give the VIP treatment. RJs Sid and Neha explore the fact that ‘behind every successful man, there is a woman’. In ‘Good Morning Delhi’, they find out how relevant this notion is to the ‘fatafaat generation’.

Debojit Saha, Programming Director, Radio One Delhi, said, “We are offering another great reason for the ‘fatafaat generation’ men to celebrate their women. ‘My woman is my world… she is the first lady’ is the proposition we are exploring. In addition to this, BBC is providing us with segments featuring women achievers of India like Barkha Dutt, Brinda Karat, and a BBC EK Mulaqat Special Women’s Day Edition with Deepika Padukone, Aishwariya Rai, Priyanka Chopra, etc.”

Radio City in keeping with its station mantra of ‘Whatte Fun’ is out to make the day a ‘fun day’ for women with ‘City Woman’. The station is holding a two-day contest which gives women listeners a chance to talk about traits and characteristics integral to their personality. Every show will give out a particular situation and ask listeners to call and share a fun incident around that situation. The best anecdotes would win goodies and hampers.
